How to Make a Pour Over Coffee Like a Pro (Even if You're Just Starting Out)

What Is Pour Over Coffee?

Pour over coffee is a manual brewing method that involves pouring hot water over ground coffee in a filter. It allows you to control every variable — from water temperature to brew time — resulting in a cleaner, more flavorful cup.

Whether you're a specialty coffee enthusiast or just tired of boring brews, the pour over method is an easy way to elevate your morning ritual.

🛠️ What You’ll Need

  • Pour over dripper (like a Hario V60 or Chemex)

  • Paper filter

  • Freshly ground coffee (medium-fine grind)

  • Hot water (195–205°F / 90–96°C)

  • Gooseneck kettle (optional, but helps with control)

  • Digital scale (optional, but useful)

  • Your favorite mug

🔢 Step-by-Step: How to Brew Pour Over Coffee

Step 1: Heat Your Water

Boil fresh water and let it sit for about 30 seconds. Aim for 195–205°F — just below boiling.

Step 2: Rinse Your Filter

Place your filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water. This removes any papery taste and warms your equipment. Discard rinse water.

Step 3: Measure & Grind Your Coffee

Use about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water (or 15–18g coffee to 250g water if weighing). Grind to a medium-fine consistency, similar to sea salt.

Step 4: Add Coffee & Start the Bloom

Place ground coffee in the filter. Pour just enough hot water to saturate the grounds (about twice the coffee weight). Let it bloom for 30–45 seconds — this releases gases for better extraction.

Step 5: Begin Pouring Slowly

Pour the rest of your water in a slow, spiral motion, starting from the center and working out. Do it in stages to maintain an even bed. The total pour time should be around 2.5 to 3.5 minutes.

Step 6: Let It Drip & Enjoy

Allow all the water to pass through. Remove the dripper, give your coffee a gentle swirl, and enjoy a clean, balanced cup of pour over perfection.

💡 Pro Tips for Better Pour Over Coffee

  • Use filtered water for better taste

  • Invest in a burr grinder for consistent grounds

  • Adjust your grind size or pour speed if it tastes too bitter or weak

  • Try with light or medium roast specialty beans to bring out unique notes
